Battle Creek Cypress Swamp is a protected forested wetland near Prince Frederick in Calvert County, Maryland, notable as one of the northernmost natural habitats of bald cypress in North America and the only large stand on Maryland’s western shore. The Nature Conservancy bought the wetland in 1957 as its first Maryland preserve, and in 1965 the National Park Service designated it a National Natural Landmark. Covering 100 acres within the larger Battle Creek watershed, it has been leased to Calvert County as a park since 1977. Its ecology preserves species that returned after the last Pleistocene glaciation and now supports distinctive birds, frogs, and wetland plants.
