Moving east along this road, Colonel John H. Morgan, with the 2nd Kentucky Cavalry and attachments, met Brigadier General R.W. Johnson's task force of the 2nd Indiana Cavalry, 4th and 5th Kentucky Cavalry, and 7th Pennsylvania Cavalry. In a fight that covered about seven miles and lasted four hours, the Federals were defeated, and the commander and about 175 men were captured. Morgan then moved to Hartsville.
