Chunnenuggee Ridge Public Garden
History
Chunnenuggee Ridge Public Garden near Union Springs, Alabama, was the state’s first public garden, established through the efforts of the Chunnenuggee Ridge Horticultural Society. Its significance is closely connected to that society, which was founded by women and is recognized as the oldest continuously operating garden club in the United States. Though the garden no longer functions as a public garden, the site remains important for what it represents in Alabama’s gardening history and in the broader history of women’s civic work.
