On May 14, 1864, at 5:30 a.m., the 123rd New York Infantry moved with its brigade to a reserve position behind the 20th Corps during heavy fighting on the west side of the battlefield. At 4:00 p.m., it moved with the division at the double-quick to the north end of the battlefield to support the left flank of the heavily engaged 4th Corps. On May 15, at 2:00 p.m., it advanced with the brigade against the enemy works at this location and met fierce resistance. Exposed on the ridge to the rear, it took heavy musket and cannon fire, held off enemy counterattacks, and drove the enemy back to their works. At daybreak on May 16, three companies advanced across this field and found the enemy works abandoned, then pursued the enemy to Cassville, Georgia. The regiment's losses were 3 killed and 8 wounded.
