In the winter of 1795-96, Drew Harrell, an ancestor of the church community, hewed the logs for the Big Spring Church House, and he and the Rev. Tidence Lane erected it. Drew Harrell was buried here in 1840, and Tidence Lane is buried near Whitesburg, Tennessee. Among the Hurst preachers who served as moderators of this church were Thomas Hurst from Sept. 1844 to Aug. 1845, Hiram Hurst from Dec. 1846 to July 1858, Mark Hurst from June 1866 to Aug. 1871, and Nathan Hurst from Sept. 1874 to Mar. 1903.
