After the Battle of Nashville, the rear guard of the Confederate Army of Tennessee under General Nathan B. Forrest and Edward C. Waithall surprised and halted the Federal advance here on the morning of December 26, 1864, in the last battle of the campaign, and the Confederate Army then continued its retreat to the Tennessee River.
