The Claxton meteorite, an L6 ordinary chondrite, fell in Georgia on December 10, 1984, and became notable as the only recorded meteorite known to have directly struck a mailbox. Eyewitness Don Richardson said the stone hit his neighbor’s mailbox about 36 metres from where he stood, crushing the back of the box and knocking it to the ground. The damaged mailbox was later purchased by a collector and sold to the Macovich Collection, where it was valued at $60,000 to $80,000. The meteorite is a light grey ordinary chondrite with visible chondrules and free iron.
