This natural overlook above Deadwood Gulch, one of the area’s most photographed vantage points, offers panoramic views made especially striking by the 200-foot elevation difference between it and Deadwood’s core Historic District below. Over the past 100 years, professional and amateur photographers have used this site, and from 1890 to 1920, as many commercial structures were built in Deadwood and panoramic photographs became widely available to the general public, such views preserved a glimpse of the city’s early architectural heritage. Seen from this vantage are the Homestake Slime Plant, Deadwood High School, Franklin Hotel, Deadwood City Hall Fire Department, Waite Block and Annex, Phoenix Block, the Chiengo Burlington and Quincy Railroad Yard, Lawrence County Courthouse, U.S. Federal Building and Post Office, Chicago and Northwestern Railroad Passenger Depot, Deadwood Masonic Temple, Bodega Bar, Bullock Hotel, and Fairmont Hotel.
