Iron Range Off-Highway Vehicle State Recreation Area in Gilbert, Minnesota, east of Lake Ore-be-gone, occupies former iron ore mining land that remained in local mining use until 1981. Covering 1,864 acres with 36 miles of trails, it is managed as a recreation area rather than a conventional scenic park, with terrain defined by the region’s industrial past. The trail system serves all classes of off-highway vehicles recognized by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, including motorcycles, all-terrain vehicles, and off-road vehicles. As one of only three state-maintained off-road recreation areas in the country, it holds a distinctive place in Minnesota’s park system and is planned to expand by 3,500 acres.
