Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad State Park near Church Creek, beside Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge, is dedicated to the life and work of Harriet Tubman, who was born in this part of Maryland and became one of the most important figures in the Underground Railroad. Created in 2007 through a land swap with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the park was developed alongside the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad National Historical Park. It is also the trailhead for the 125-mile Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Byway, and its visitor center, opened on March 11, 2017, connects the surrounding marshes and waterways to Tubman’s story and the wider history of resistance to slavery on the Eastern Shore.
