With active railroad freight and passenger service creating demand for overnight lodging, several hotels were built, including the imposing Union House, later the Planters House Hotel, on the northwest corner of Illinois Avenue and Jackson Street. The hotel was enlarged to three stories in 1874 and, known as the Franklin Hotel in the twentieth century, was demolished in 1991. A southbound view of the 100 block of North Illinois Avenue around 1890 includes the Oldenhage Building in the foreground, a structure built before 1890 and extensively remodeled in 1917. In 1887, the City Council ordered improvements to fourteen streets and required five-foot brick sidewalks instead of oak plank sidewalks on Main and other major streets, while broad twelve-foot brick or stone walks were also ordered for the east, north, and west sides of the Town Square.
