Between 1906 and 1910, Union Pacific coal mines and coal camps were established in the area, while South Superior was intentionally excluded because it was not owned by Union Pacific Coal Company and had little use to the company at that time. South Superior lay between Superior and Japanese village and was bordered on the west by Union Pacific’s B Mine. Once the mining site was selected, dwelling houses and miscellaneous mine buildings were put under construction, and during the life of A Mine, a store and schoolhouse were erected. In the main part of town, store and office buildings were also constructed. The town was known as Reliance until July 14, 1906, when it was renamed Superior after the Superior Coal Company, which had originally opened the mines. While company-owned homes stood adjacent to the mines, South Superior developed as a place for independently minded residents; beginning as a tent town called White City and Dog Town, it grew into a relatively large commercial center.
