Alonzo "Lonnie" Clayton was born in Kansas City, Missouri, in 1876 and followed his brother into the riding profession. At age 12, he went to Chicago to become an exercise rider. After his first win in 1891, he came to Louisville to ride for Bashford Manor Stables, which stood here from 1887 to 1970, and had four major victories in the two years he rode for them. On May 11, 1892, at age 15, he became the youngest jockey to win the Kentucky Derby, rallying Azra to victory in 2:41.5. He won more than 24 stakes races from 1891 to 1898, rode in three more Kentucky Derbies from 1893 to 1897, was honored with the Churchill Downs jockey crown in the fall of 1893, and died in 1917.
