BP owns and operates three wind farms in Benton County, Fowler Ridge 1, 2, and 3, with 355 wind turbines and 600 megawatts of total generating capacity, enough to power about 160,000 homes. Fowler Ridge 1 has 162 turbines, 301.3 megawatts of capacity, and began commercial operation in 2009; Fowler Ridge 2 has 133 turbines, 199.5 megawatts, and began commercial operation in 2009; Fowler Ridge 3 has 60 turbines, 99 megawatts, and began commercial operation in 2009. The farms employed hundreds of construction workers and up to 40 permanent workers across the three sites. Safety and environmental measures included awards for Fowler Ridge 1 and 3, an improved climber tether system made publicly available, and turbine adjustments during peak migration season that helped reduce bat casualty rates by more than 70 percent between 2010 and 2016. BP supports the sites from on-site personnel and a remote operating center in Houston, Texas, which monitors conditions and dispatches staff when needed. Since 2010, BP has donated more than $120,000 to community initiatives in Benton County and surrounding areas. More broadly, Benton County wind farms brought over 95 new jobs, supported local businesses and housing, lowered property taxes, helped county government pay off debts, and contributed money for local projects and schools. Other county wind projects included the Benton County Wind Farm, Hoosier Wind Farm, Fowler Ridge phases operated by BP Alternative Energy, and the Amazon Wind Farm Fowler Ridge, a 150 megawatt facility that began commercial operation in January 2016 with 65 Siemens turbines, supplies electricity to Amazon Web Services, powers about 46,000 homes annually, and is estimated to add $40 million over 25 years to the regional economy.
