Limited U.S. military involvement included the Iran Hostage Crisis from 1979 to 1981, the Grenada Invasion in 1983, the Beirut Intervention from 1983 to 1991, the Panama Invasion in 1989, Somalia Famine Relief in 1993, and the Bosnia/Kosovo Peacekeeping Mission beginning in 1999. The war on terror began on September 11, 2001, when terrorists carried out suicide attacks on the twin towers of the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, killing over 3,000 Americans. Police and firefighters at the scene were regarded as heroes, and passengers aboard a fourth hijacked plane prevented another attack on Washington DC, remembered in Todd Beamer's words, "Let's roll!" President George W. Bush committed the United States to a worldwide war on terror, beginning with the Al-Qaeda network in Afghanistan. American troops were deployed to seek out and destroy terrorist facilities while deposing the Taliban government, and the Department of Homeland Security was established to oversee the fight against terrorism in America. Several terrorist plots were later thwarted through extraordinary security measures and increased vigilance around the world. In 2003, a U.S.-led coalition attacked Iraq to depose another terror regime, with precision air strikes followed by a ground assault in March that led to the fall of Baghdad within a month. The war on terror continues today.
