At his tavern here on Feb. 11, 1808, Jesse Fell successfully burned “stone coal” in an open grate, a famed experiment that spurred the rise of the anthracite industry and the Wyoming Valley's growth. He was a judge from 1798 to 1830 and the first burgess of Wilkes-Barre in 1806.
