Fleche #1 stood on this hill with a brass 12-pounder cannon under Lieutenant William Horndon of the Royal Artillery. Unaware that fire from Major Murfree’s Light Infantry in the center and from the west was a diversion for two other American columns advancing around both flanks, Horndon opened fire after hearing heavy musketry. He later recalled that by the flash of the gun he could see the American Light Infantry coming through the water on the left, but he could not turn the cannon effectively because the embrasure was too confined. Meanwhile, a 3-pounder cannon near the front of the present museum fired 69 rounds at a secondary American column attacking around the north side of the peninsula, but it was too late to stop the Light Infantry’s rapid advance. The main column, 700 men wading through Haverstraw Bay on the south and led by Wayne, had already outflanked Horndon’s 12-pounder and was climbing the rocky slope toward the Upper Works.
