Centennial School #11 was built in 1880 by several homesteaders and ranchers as part of pioneers’ efforts to establish a school every three miles. It operated as a school until 1936, then served Centennial Valley as a polling location until the 1960s and also hosted church services. The original furnishings remain in the one-room school for grades 1-8. In 1962, Henry J. Frawley purchased the building and began its restoration. For the past several decades, Spearfish elementary school teachers and their students, dressed in period costumes, have experienced the historical and cultural legacy of the pioneers of the Northern Black Hills there.
