Pointe Mouillee State Game Area is a 7,483-acre protected wetland at the mouth of the Huron River on Lake Erie, with additional tracts in the Detroit River. Known since at least 1749 by a French name meaning “wet point,” the area has roots in early Great Lakes fur trade activity. In 1875, local sportsmen bought about 2,000 acres for a private shooting club, and in 1945 the state acquired those lands for public use. After severe marsh loss, a major restoration from 1976 to 1981 created a barrier island and related works, helping make this one of North America’s largest freshwater marsh restoration projects. Today it is valued for recreation, birdlife, and its recognized ecological and historic significance.
