In 1940, the Soviet NKVD killed Polish prisoners of war and other Poles who gave their lives for their fatherland, including officers of the Polish Army, spiritual leaders, intelligentsia, police officers, soldiers, and border patrol personnel. More than 22,000 Polish prisoners of war were murdered at Katyn, Miednoje, Charkow, Minsk-Kuropaty, and Kijow-Bykownia, and others were tortured and murdered in Kazakhstan, Siberia, and other parts of Soviet territory.
