North Star
History
3
This community was settled by people of German descent. A creamery was built in 1894 and a general store in 1895 or 1896. The North Star Post Office was established in Sec. 22, Waverly Twp. and moved to the store in 1898. An ice house, church, parsonage, telephone company and several homes were also part of this thriving trade center. The post office closed in 1904 after Welcome (8 miles SW) began a rural mail route. The general store closed about 1910. The exact date of the founding of the "German Evangelical Peace Congregation," more commonly known as the North Star Church, is unknown. Services were held until 1923. The building was demolished in 1937. All that remains today of this lost town is the cemetery.
