The city of Vancouver, Washington received recognition for the spirit and sacrifice shown by Medal of Honor recipients buried in the Vancouver Barracks Cemetery: First Sergeant James M. Hill of the 5th U.S. Cavalry for the Indian Campaigns in 1873, First Sergeant Moses Williams of the 9th U.S. Cavalry for the Indian Campaigns in 1876, First Lieutenant William W. McCammon of the 24th Missouri Regiment for the Civil War in 1896, and Bugler Herman Pfisterer of the 21st Infantry for the Spanish American War in 1899. The monument was dedicated on 8 November 1991 by General Colin L. Powell, Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff, and Major General Patrick H. Brady, CMH, Congressional Medal of Honor Society.
