Tule Lake National Wildlife Refuge protects 39,116 acres of wetlands and uplands in northern California near the Oregon border as part of the Klamath Basin National Wildlife Refuge Complex. Established in 1928 by President Calvin Coolidge, it serves as an important link in the Pacific Flyway, providing feeding and resting habitat for large numbers of migratory waterfowl in its marshes, waterways, and shrub-planted higher ground. Species found here include several kinds of geese, while its waters support endangered fish such as the Lost River sucker and shortnose sucker. About 19,000 acres of leased cropland also make it a managed working landscape for wildlife and public use.
