Daniel Boone served in 1789 as lieutenant colonel of the Kanawha militia, helped organize Kanawha County, and in 1791 was a delegate to the Virginia Assembly. His cabin stood across the river from the cave in the cliff above, and he hunted deer and made salt from a spring at the water's edge.
