In the 1800s, a view of the two-block area on the south side of the square showed the scene before the first courthouse was constructed in the center. In 1900, another view captured a pre-celebration of the Allen County Fair, with a crowd lined across Madison Avenue to watch a turtle race. That photograph was taken directly in front of the New York Store, now the Allen County Historical Society, and looked to the southeast.
