Capt. James Moore Homestead
History
Near Boissevain in rural Tazewell County, Virginia, this archaeological site spans both Native American and colonial history. Long before James Moore established his homestead there in 1772, it had been a palisaded Native village from the Late Woodland period. The place is also tied to the region’s earliest settlement, as Moore was an early settler and militia captain. In 1786, a Shawnee party killed him at the site and took his family prisoner, linking the homestead directly to the violence and instability that marked the frontier era.
