The house at 226 S. Mechanic St. was built in 1871, shortly after the land was sold to Frederick R. Hale by former county auditor and Brig. Gen. O. C. Maxwell. Gothic Revival in style, it was praised in a survey in the 1980s for a front porch called the charming highlight of the house. On Oct. 10, 1984, it was placed on the National Register. In 1882, it was the home of Mary Jane Keever, the widow of former Warren County Commissioner Nathan Keever. Mary was said to have a good business mind. She died here in 1915 with her granddaughter Mary Horn at her side, having outlived her husband and all 8 of her children. The house remained in the Horn family for the next 71 years.
