Captain Avery Museum in Shady Side, Maryland, preserves a historic waterfront home and landscape that connect one family residence to the wider maritime heritage of the Chesapeake Bay. Built about 1860 as the home of Capt. Salem Avery, a Chesapeake Bay waterman, the house reflects the working life of a bay community through its water-facing setting. Enlarged in the nineteenth century and again in the 1920s, the property later included use by the National Masonic Fishing and Country Club. Its grounds and boathouse, with the 1937 deadrise workboat Edna Florence, preserve ties to local boatbuilding and watermen’s culture.
