This bombproof, with a ventilation shaft leading to the top of the bastion, was considered the best place for keeping food such as salt meat, peas, flour, rice, and vinegar, along with other non-weapon supplies. For most of the fort’s history, it served as a storage area for these provisions. During the 1777 siege, it was converted into a makeshift hospital, and the turns in the hallway prevented shrapnel from entering, helping keep troops and supplies safe.
