Opened in 1884 and purchased in 1898 by the Carnegie Steel Company, Carrie Furnaces 6 and 7 were part of a blast furnace complex that revolutionized the iron and steel industry. Iron produced at this site was converted into steel at the Homestead Steel Works and was used to build the Panama Canal lock gates and the Empire State Building. The structures have been designated a National Historic Landmark for their national significance in the history of the United States of America.
