Near here, two foraging expeditions came into conflict on December 20, 1861. The Union force was commanded by General Ord and the Confederate force by J.E.B. Stuart. Stuart attacked to protect his foraging parties, but after a sharp fight he was forced to retire. The next day he returned with reinforcements and carried off his wounded.
