Organized in 1852 by German-American settlers, the Free Congregation (Freie Gemeinde) dominated the cultural, economic and intellectual life of Sauk City well into the twentieth century. It is one of two congregations surviving a once prominent free thought movement in Wisconsin. The present building was erected in 1884 and contains an outstanding free thought library.
