In the late 19th century, farmers brought hay, wood, and other produce to Haymarket Square in the wide-open space on Main Street, where city residents could buy hay for their horses and wood for their stoves. By 1898, the city government planned to pave the street and declared the mud, manure, and undesirable loafers a public nuisance. Farmers and some businessmen on the square, including grain and farm equipment sellers, protested, but Mayor William Newell called it "a common country barnyard" that no respectable city should tolerate. The city council moved the haymarket to Bates Street near Ash Street. The square was renamed Union Square, and in 1928 it became Hulett Square to honor Capt. Frank W. Hulett, the first Lewiston man killed in World War I.
