On August 25, 1863, U.S. and Confederate cavalry clashed near Brownsville. The initial battle involving approximately 7,000 men occurred east of the town. After a brief artillery duel, Col. Geiger's U.S. troopers forced the retreat of Gen. Marmaduke's Confederate force. Marmaduke formed new battle lines 6 miles to the west. The Union advance was repulsed, but the Confederates were forced to retreat. In less than 3 weeks, the Union advance on Little Rock ended in success.
