The Discovery, the smallest of the three ships, was the only one to stay at Jamestown after the first voyage to Virginia. During the voyage from England, it carried 21 people. It was used by Captain John Smith on his voyages of discovery up and down the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries, and he also used it to facilitate trade with Native Americans. Although complete records of the ship's dimensions may have been lost, pieced-together information suggests measurements of 66 feet sparred length, 50 feet 10 inches length on deck, 14 feet beam, 6 feet 6 inches draft, 59 feet mainmast height, 1,160 square feet of sail area, and 20 tons burthen tonnage.
