On July 18, 1805, after traveling over 400 miles from the Mandan Villages without encountering any Indians, the Corps of Discovery ate breakfast at this point and, having seen abandoned lodges and tipi rings above the great falls and into the mountains, resolved to send a small party ahead to try to find the Shoshone, or Snake Indians, Sacagawea's tribe and the horse traders of the northern plains, before the daily discharge of the expedition's guns might alarm them and drive them into the mountains; Capt. Clark, York, Joseph Fields, and John Potts then went on in advance along the river and on Indian roads, sometimes traveling overland into the mountains, and they were not reunited with Lewis and Clark until July 22, 1805, in the Townsend Valley, while the expedition did not meet the Shoshones until beyond Dillon, Montana, 250 miles farther south.
