Soon after ascending this branch of the river, William Bartram saw on the right hand a delightful little bluff consisting chiefly of shells and covered with a dark grove of red cedar, zanthoxilon, and myrtle. Though the tremendous thunder all around the hemisphere greatly alarmed him because he still had a large lake to cross, he could not resist the temptation to stop there just before being hit by the hurricane on Lake Beresford.
