Millersylvania State Park, a nine hundred three-acre recreation area on Deep Lake south of Olympia, preserves old-growth cedar and fir forest, freshwater shoreline, and traces of the region’s logging past. First homesteaded in 1855, the land passed to the Miller family, who donated it to the state in 1921 for permanent park use. Much of the park’s enduring character comes from Civilian Conservation Corps work completed between 1933 and 1935, including roads, trails, shelters, bathhouses, and other facilities that led to its listing on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009. Its CCC history also includes segregation and discrimination against fifty-one Black enrollees in 1934.
