Asbury United Methodist Church began with an original sanctuary built in 1829 on 1/2 acre of land purchased on September 12 for $50 from Sarah Stewart and Andrew Anderson. Constructed from lumber cut from trees on the lot, that building was moved to another location when the present church was built in 1848 by local carpenter Caleb Twilley. The steeple was added in 1884 by Benjamin F. Messick and Peter A. Malone. The church was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in September, 1999. Its cemetery is among the oldest in Wicomico County and has remained in continuous use since the early 19th century.
