Manatee Island, in the Caloosahatchee River, was donated to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service to inspire renewed interest in land dedicated to the formation of the Caloosahatchee National Wildlife Refuge, established July 1, 1920, by President Woodrow Wilson. The partnership was intended to inspire other private commitment to maintaining the natural environment of this area.
