The Newton Hotel was the first hotel built in the Village of Mound Bayou. In 1909, A. P. Hood praised its sanitary surroundings, rooming arrangements, culinary excellence, and dining service as satisfying even the most rigorously exacting customer. Its location provided easy access to the train depot.
