Near this site in July 1775, when the area was part of Berkeley County, Virginia, two companies of riflemen led by Captains Hugh Stephenson of Berkeley County and Daniel Morgan of Frederick County, Virginia, rallied before beginning a 600-mile journey to join General George Washington in the defense of Boston, Massachusetts. These frontier patriots were among the first to answer the call to arms following the Continental Congress resolution of June 14, 1775, which authorized the raising of 10 companies of riflemen. This was the beginning of what would become, under the Constitution, the United States Army.
