From early 1958 through late 1959, Zora Neale Hurston lived at 1734 Avenue L in a house in a new subdivision developed by Dr. Clem C. Benton, a prominent Fort Pierce physician and community leader, who allowed his family friend to live there rent free when she could not pay her apartment rent. During the last two years of her life in Fort Pierce, she briefly taught at Lincoln Park Academy in 1958, wrote articles for The Chronicle, and worked quietly in the house on her last, never published book, a comprehensive biography and history of King Herod the Great, while enjoying visitors, the company of her dog, Spot, and tending a garden on the east side of the house. Dr. Benton and his older daughter, Arlena, often checked on her and brought her dinner, as did neighbors, and she was also a frequent dinner guest at the Benton family home on Sundays. Her residency there ended after a debilitating stroke required hospitalization and nursing care, and she died on January 28, 1960, after which the house was maintained privately by members of the Benton family. The house was designated a National Historic Landmark by the U.S. Department of Interior and National Park Service in 1991 and was moved 500 feet north from its original location at 1734 School Court in 1995 to allow for the expansion of Lincoln Park Academy.
