From Independence and Westport (Kansas City), Missouri, to the Columbia River, the Oregon Trail was the route of the first Oregon colonists and the trail of trappers and traders as early as 1830. It became a main road to the gold fields and western military posts and also served as the path of the Pony Express and Overland Stage. Throughout its course, it was gradually superseded by railroads.
