Near Montgomery, New York, this site was one of three places involved in the 1801 excavation of a mastodon skeleton led by artist and naturalist Charles Willson Peale of the Philadelphia Museum. That work produced what has been called the world’s first fully articulated prehistoric skeleton and became an important moment in early American science and museum display. By excavating and reconstructing the animal as a complete specimen rather than a collection of separate bones, Peale helped make prehistoric life available for public study and exhibition. The recovered mastodon is now displayed at the Hessisches Landesmuseum Darmstadt in Germany.
