Farnsworth Metropark in Waterville, Ohio, occupies a long stretch of the Maumee River’s western shore and encompasses layers of natural and human history. Its central landmark, Roche de Bout, was an important point of reference for Native peoples and early explorers, and before the Battle of Fallen Timbers in 1794, Miami, Shawnee, Lenape, and allied leaders gathered there for councils before facing General Anthony Wayne. Across from the rock, Wayne built Fort Deposit on August 19, 1794, as a supply depot. The park also preserves the ruins of the former Interurban Bridge and contains the visible Bowling Green Fault, a rare Great Lakes geological feature.
