North Mountain, on the border of Catskill and Hunter in New York’s Catskill Mountains, is part of the Catskill Escarpment and has long drawn hikers for its broad views and easy trail access from the North-South Lake area. Trails from the campground join the Escarpment Trail at the summit, and the Long Path follows the same route there. A notable feature, North Point, offers open ledges below the summit with sweeping views over the lakes, nearby peaks, and the Hudson River valley. Those vistas were associated with Hudson River School painters, while the summit also supports an unusual boreal forest of red spruce and balsam fir.
