In ancient seabottom rocks exposed in this stream, paleontologist Kenneth E. Caster found the holotype specimen of a rare fossil sponge. In 1939, recognizing the support that brought the sciences of geology and paleontology to such eminence, he named the new species in honor of the oil industry's birthplace and its founder.
