After taking 300 abandoned USA horses and mules at Versailles, Morgan's Raiders came to Midway on July 15, 1862. Warned of a troop train approaching from Frankfort, Morgan had the tracks torn up and howitzers positioned, but the train was warned and returned to Frankfort. He then took the telegraph line and tried to lure a train from Lexington to continue on, but it also turned back. Morgan and his men reached Georgetown that evening.
