On September 7, 1756, Colonel John Armstrong and about 800 frontiersmen from Cumberland County stopped here on their way to attack the Indian town of Kittanning. He left 18 men under Lieutenant James Hogg to watch a band of Indians seen at a nearby campfire. The next morning Hogg attacked that band and was killed along with a number of his men. Here on March 16, 1777, Fergus Moorhead was taken prisoner by Indians, and his companion, a Mr. Simpson, was killed and scalped. The place received its name from the many blankets left here by Colonel Armstrong's men.
